Twenty or so High Rollers got together on this sunny Sunday for a ride organized by our Northwest Houston chapter. Destination: Somerville and points in between. We left from the Longhorn Saloon around 10:00 am, heading out US 290 towards Chappell Hill. The first stop was an antique car sales lot near Hempstead. The lot was closed, but we were able to gawk through the fence at the lineup of classic cars and trucks. Moving on, we turned off at Chappell Hill onto FM 1155. What used to be a great, curvy and scenic road had been transformed by the state highway department into miles of gravel and dust. Surviving that, we arrived at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park--birthplace of the Republic of Texas. Here we took time to cool off, look at the exhibits, and shop in the park store. (Nice hat, Hot Rod!) From there we took the back way to Somerville, via the scenic "La Bahia Road" (FM 390) and the town of Independence.

With the record-setting heat of the day upon us, we arrived at Somerville's Country Inn for lunch around 2:00. The lunch crowd still had the place packed, so we had a long wait out on the porch. The food was good though, and came in huge portions. Steaks that hung over the edges of the plate! Bellies full, we headed for Bellville and a brief stop at a roadside park. There we divided into two packs: some headed for a benefit at Bryant's Ice House, the rest homeward-bound. All in all, a great day spent ridin' with our brothers.
